Description

Guided tour of the city, through three different points of view

Naples has a thousand faces and two thousand eyes.
It is a city of perspectives, views, shadows and light that make it even more and new for its own inhabitants.

The purpose of this route is to show it through three different points of view: from below, by surface and from above. Each day will be dedicated to one of these angles transporting tourists, like in an elevator, from the bowels of the city up to the highest peaks of the body and spirit.

Program

Day 1:

Naples underground
Arrival to the hotel chosen for stay and check-in.
At 2,00pm meeting with the guide at the historic city center and visit the monumental complex of the Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore. To know the secrets of the Neapolitan subsoil, the tour begins with a visit of the excavations of the Basilica, one of the city's most important, full of valuable evidence of the passage of the Greeks and Romans.
It was built on top of the Macellum, the (Roman) city’s marketplace. You can view crumbled archways and the remains of ancient shops. A stairway located in the complex’s cloister descends just seven metres below ground, landing on one of the narrow streets of ancient Neapolis. Here the centuries-old shopfronts of the macellum are as clearly recognisable as the structure’s characteristic diamond-shaped opus reticulatum and its successor, opus latericium.
The walk continues with a visit of "Naples Underground".
Forty meters below the characteristic and lively streets of the Historic Center of Naples, you find a different world, unexplored, isolated by time, but deeply connected with the world above.
Our guides will take you on a journey through 2,400 years of history, from the ancient Greeks to modern times, unveiling the “womb” of Naples from an archaeological, historical, anthropological and geological point of view. Going down 136 steps, low and comfortable, we will reach a depth of about 40 meters below ground, where we will visit few of the tuffaceous cavities excavated in the Greek era (IV centuries BC.), and exploited as cisterns for the water supply of our city for approximately 23 centuries.
We will also visit the air raid shelters from the Second World War, the War Museum and the Hypogeum Gardens, a new project which the association of “Naples underground” offers to its visitors as well as multiple educational and scientific activities. The visit has a duration of about one hour.
Return to the hotel and overnight.
